Why Indonesia
Spotlight
on Indonesia – World’s
largest exporter by 2010?
IBC’s 14th World Rice Commerce 2009 is set in Indonesia
where recent investor activity and government policy make
it a country that has potential to be the next big player
in the rice supply chain.
- Interest in agri investments in Indonesia’s vast
resources and productive lands is high as governments
of rice importing nations, including the Middle East countries,
recommend an increase in investments abroad.
- Indonesia will allocate a significant portion of farm
land to joint ventures with Saudi investors to be used
mainly for the cultivation of rice. The move would turn
Indonesia into the world's top rice exporter. Saudi BinLadin
Group has planned to invest close to $3 billion in Indonesia's
ricefarming industry on 500,000 hectares of land in the
Papua province.
- The Government has announced its plan to develop the
Merauke Integrated Food & Energy Estate (MIFEE) and once
completed, it is expected to be one of the biggest commodities
producing hubs in Asia.
- In addition, Indonesia produced a rice surplus of about
1-1.2 million tonnes in 2008 due to bumper harvests. The
country is looking into exporting some of its rice surplus
to help ease food shortage.
